NCAA SAAC

October 1st, 2006

  •  Called To Order By President Megan Young

  •  Three Guests Were Present:
        --> Pat Howey, Mike Cappacio & Bill Bolduc

  •  Mike Cappacio
        --> Looks forward to a great year of athletics for UNCW
        --> Spoke about the financial struggles of UNCW
        --> Constantly working to improve funds (UNCW is least funded in the CAA)
        --> Endowment Fund increase
        --> Currently has 40 endowment sponsors and wants 10 more within the next 5 years
        --> Current Problems Include:
                * Track & Field Permanent Bleachers
                * Baseball Locker Rooms
                * Soccer Facilities
                * Handicap accessibility in Trask Coliseum
        --> No teams will be added until the current sports are fully funded (FOOTBALL)

  •  Bill Bolduc
        --> Faculty-Athletic Representative (Communication Studies Faculty)
        --> Serves as the liaison for between athletics and staff
        --> Wants to help eliminate the stereotype that teachers give to student-athletes
        --> Two Ideas to "Bridge The Gap"
                * Honorary Coach - This would be a one time special event for a staff, faculty, or community
                    member to sit in with the team during a game, practice, etc. This could potentially bridge the
                    gap with faculty who don’t understand how hard the student athletes work each day.

                * Faculty Fellow - The team would vote and a faculty member would work as a connector with a
                    team per year or season. Athletes could go to them with academic questions or issues.

  •  SAAC decided that both ideas were good but only one was needed.

  •  Pat Howey
        --> Reminded SAAC executive officers about the Athletic Council meeting October 11th
        --> All officers are expected to be present
        --> Golden Hawk Room will be off-limits next week due to the Charlotte Bobcats training camp

  •  First Event will be the Women's Soccer Game on October 13th
        --> Game starts at 7 PM
        --> At half-time there will be T-Shirts and food for all the athletes
        --> Midnight Madness follows and those events will go until 1 AM

  •  BryErica Barnes will be in charge of promotions and marketing committee

  •  Uri Robinson will be in charge of the SAAC website and with help of James Thor will take additional
        pictures for events.

  •  Blood Drive
        --> A success with 50 more donations than last year
        --> Goal was 200. 177 donated but a lot of people turned away due to time constraint

  •  CAA Voting for motions and rules will take place at next meeting

  •  Majority Vote for Athlete Variety/Talent Show
        --> Each team must enter at least one act
        --> Money will go to SAAC Budget (Tickets - $5)
        --> More focus once other events pass
