HereWhat is Psi Chi?
Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in
Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purposes of
encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in
scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology.
Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate men and
women who are making the study of psychology one of their
major interests, and who meet the minimum qualifications.
Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor
Societies and is an affiliate of the American
Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for
Psychological Science (APS). UNCW's Chapter of Psi Chi
encourages members to engage and present research to
advance psychology. This chapter also supports many local
charities and strives to involve members in community
outreach.
What does Psi Chi do?
Psi Chi holds bimonthly meetings in order to discuss what
charities to support and what events to participate in,
volunteer opportunities and any other topics that are
relevant. Psi Chi holds weekly bake sales and uses their
weekly bake sales to help raise money for various charities
and to fund their yearly induction ceremony. The inductions
are held in the spring each academic year where all new
members to Psi Chi are formally inducted into the
organization.
Psi Chi invites psychology faculty who are looking for
students to work in their labs to come and talk about what
DIS is and what their labs do. This encourages students to
participate in research and make it easy for students to get
involved. Each semester, Psi Chi additionally holds Grad
Night in order to discuss the steps for applying to graduate
school. During this particular meeting, we discuss GRE
preparation, recommendation letters, and personal
statements. We often have current graduate students, or
faculty to come in and talk about the application process.
Organizations UNC-Wilmington Psi Chi has supported in the
past include: NAMI, Open Gate, Active Minds, Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society, International Rhett Syndrome Foundation,
Carolina Canines, Coastal Therapeutic Riding Program, Easter
Seals UCP, Boys and Girls Club, Good Sheperd Ministries,
Relay for Life.
Each Month Psi Chi chooses a community service event to
participate in. The following are some of the events from
the past year: Strollathon for Rhett Syndrome, Light the
Night, Alzheimer’s Walk, NAMI Walk for Awareness, Young at
Heart Dance, Walk for Those Who Can’t, Relay for Life, Walk
With Me, the Angel Tree Program, Battle of the Brains,
Shack-A-Thon, UNC-W Gives, the Thanksgiving Food Drive.
What is Psychology Club?
Psychology club is a student organization for any UNCW
student. Psi Chi Honor Society and Psychology club work
together to provide services to the community and to receive
benefits such as the opportunity to attend conferences,
attend Psi Chi/Psychology club exclusive talks, receive
grants and scholarships and many other awards,
opportunities, and benefits.
Those who have benefitted the most from Psychology club were
UNCW students who choose not to join Psi Chi, students who
had not yet met the criteria to be accepted into Psi Chi
(credit hours, declared major, etc.) and students who wanted
to be notified of opportunities to volunteer and support
others.
Also, students are not limited to one or the other, rather
all UNCW students can be members of both Psi Chi and
psychology club! Psychology Club only has about one dozen
members so we urge you to sign up!
If you are interested in becoming a member of Psychology
club or have any questions please email Psi Chi President.
