In March 2007 eight UNCW students spent their spring
break working in Nicaragua. Before leaving we
raised over $8,000 in the states to fund the completion of a roof covered
basketball/ indoor soccer court. The court is located in a community center
that provides many children a safe place to play after school and provides
the community with a library and computer lab. While in Managua, Nicaragua
we helped in the construction of the futbol sala court and other
projects needed at the community center.
While in Nicaragua we also were able to visit some of
Manna Project's programs that are run by college graduates to help people in
the community. We had the pleasure of visiting the feeding programs and an
advanced English class. These programs inspired MPI-W to come back and help
locally with ESL and translation.
Look like fun? Join us for our
two spring break trips to Managua, Nicaragua and Quito, Ecuador this spring
break. Check out contact us to get a spot.
We also participated in a community event called Dia
De Luz (Day of Light) where alongside 200 other students and various
gringos and Nicaraguans we spent a day in the city dump, La Chureca,
where over 1,000 people live and work. This is a place where MPI puts a
great deal of focus to help with health issues and child sponsorships. On
this day we played and laughed with the children of the dump and then danced
together at a concert.
We also had a lot of fun. We had a few days for
relaxation and exploration where we went to a beautiful island to climb a
volcano and spent some time at the beach.
