Housing and Resident Life

Resident Halls

Here we will look at the items you may need to make your room more comfortable. The basics of where you will be staying and what the school will provide in both the dorm building and individual rooms is outlined on the UNCW website. Below are some details that are not provided that we think are important.

All of the rooms are air conditioned and the temperature can be controlled for each individual room, so feel free to bring the appropriate bedding in regards to the temperature you and you roommate agree for the room.

The kitchen does NOT provide cutlery or cooking utensils (pots, pans, etc.).

The International House here at UNCW provides many of your basic living needs.

These include the following:
    • Washer and Dryer
    • Community Toilet and Shower Facilities (28 students per)
    • TV and activity rooms
    • Full Kitchen Facilities
    • Computer Lab
    • Courtesy Phone Line
    • Laundry room in dorms – washing machines and dryers.

If you choose to live in the apartments you will also be provided with the above facilities; the International House does contain activity rooms and a computer lab, unlike many of the other halls on campus. WiFi connection is available in most places on campus and there are labs in most educational buildings.

Individual Rooms

The international house provides two person rooms with basic furnishings. These include the following:
    • Cupboard/Wardrobe
    • Two single beds (extra long twin)
    • Desk

The bedding provided does not include sheets, comforters, or pillows. If you have an extra long twin bed you will need to buy different sheets. Twin sheets will not fit these beds.
    X-Long Twin:
    • Mattress Size 39 x 80 inches (99 x 203 cm)
    • Fitted Sheet Size 39 x 80 inches (99 x 203 cm)
    • Flat Sheet Size 66 x 102 inches (or 167 x 259 cm)

Books

BOOKS COST AROUND AN EXTRA $500.

Be aware that students have to purchase their own books each semester, for each class, and the cost is approximately $500. The easiest solution is to buy the books at the UNCW bookstore, but it can be expensive!

Alternative places to buy books are at the off campus bookstore at 415 South College Road and on the internet.

The following websites are commonly used by students: Amazon.com, Abebooks.com, Alibris.com, Half.com. Keep in mind that it normally takes a couple weeks to receive books that are ordered online, so students are encouraged to order books from an online site earlier than if they were to purchase their books from either bookstore.

Meal Plans

Meals plans are automatically assigned to UNCW campus residents. You can see what your plan includes at the above link, and here you can also add more meals or more food dollars if needed. If you do choose to change your assigned meal plan you must go to Auxiliary Services in the Warwick Center and sign saying that you have changed.

One Card

Used for meals (food dollars), printing, getting into games, getting into dorm, getting into buildings, bus pass, and Student ID. More information can be found at the website.
