STAND UNCW - Several Amnesty International members are also members of STAND UNCW. STAND UNCW works to bring the end to the genocide in Darfur and other ongoing crises in our world. We do this by focusing on three things: education, advocacy, and fundraising.

UNCW March of Dimes Collegiate Council - Amnesty International member Kate Schrum is a founding member of the UNCW March of Dimes Collegiate Council. March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and researches the problems that threaten the health of babies.

Dr. Mary Ombonga:

From Wives to Students: Opportunities and Challenges of Educating Girls Rescued from Early and Pre-Arranged Marriages in Kenya    

          Dr. Mary Ombonga, a native of Kenya currently serves as coordinator of K-12  International Outreach in the Watson School of Education at UNCW, promoting  intercultural understanding and global awareness in K-12 schools.    

Her talk, From Wives to Students: Opportunities and challenges of educating girls rescued from early and prearranged marriages in Kenya, draws on her current and on-going research on the education of girls who are rescued and enrolled in a Center of Excellence. These girls are those who are either rescued or run away to escape early and pre-arranged marriages or forced female genital mutilation (FGM) in their communities. She will share her perspectives and experiences on the opportunities and the multifaceted challenges of educating these girls.
