Frequently Asked Questions: How do I join the Rock Climbing Club? Any UNCW student can join the club by attending one of the scheduled meetings or by contacting any of the club officials. The cost of membership is only $15 for an academic year. What are the member benefits? As a member you have reserved hours to climb at the wall in the Student Recreation Center with other club members. You are also able to compete with the UNCW team and attend outdoor climbing trips. Do I need to be an experienced climber to join the club? Climbers of every level are encouraged to join the club. By climbing with others you gain experience and techniques that will improve your skills. What kinds of activities does the club participate in? The club facilitates numerous outdoor trips to SC, TN, VA and parts of NC. Other activities include participating in climbing competitions, group climbing sessions, and seaside scramble. We also offer access to guest speakers, climbing certifications, and leadership certificates. How is a climbing competition judged? There are three types of climbing competitions. In a 'Red Point' competition climbers are given points for the number of climbs that they complete. Competitors in 'On Sight' competitions are given points for the height that they reach. Bouldering is more technical climbing that is lower to the ground so there is no need to use ropes. Bouldering competitions are then judged similarly to Red Point competitions.
