Competitions

Each year, we participate in different competitions to apply the skills we are learning. Recently, we have begun expanding on the number of competitions we compete in, so there are many opportunities to get involved and test your metal against other colleges and people. Beyond just the thrill and joy of competing, they are a great opportunity to learn, make new friends, meet professionals in the field, and network with potential recruiters.

The Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition - CCDC

This is one of the bigger competitions held nationally for colleges throughout the US. It begins with a regional virtual qualifier, moves onto a regional competition from the top 8 teams, and then to a national competition comprised of the regional winners. We are part of the Southeast region and compete in Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (SECCDC). We have made it to regional competition for the last 5 years in a row and are, historically, the most consistant team to make it to the regionals in the Southeast region. It is a blue team/ red team competetion where the blue team (us) are put into the scenario of taking over a business' operations as the new IT department. It is our job to repair and defend different systmes and our network from being compromised by the red team (a team of cyber security professionals playing the part of mailcious hackers), while dealing with the daily operations of a functioning business.

The National Cyber League Competiton - NCL

This is also one of the larger competitions held nationally for colleges and high school students throughout the US. The competition is online and you are able to complete individually and as a team. It consists of a mix of different puzzle-based CTF style challenges, both offensive and defensive. There are different skill levels and a spring and fall season. It features a "training gym" where you are able to train prior to the competition and get a feel for what to expect.

The Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition - PCDC

This was historically for college and high school students from South Carolina, but they are looking to expand their participation, and we were lucky enough to be the only team from North Carolina to be invited in 2019. The competition is similar to the SECCDC, but there is no qualifier and there is not a national competition.
