Monthly Meeting of the UNCW Subunit of the American Fisheries Society

March 15, 2007

The speaker this week was Betsy Laban

There are a couple of good talks coming up in the region. One by E.O. Wilson at UNCW on Monday, March 19, 2007 entitled "The Future of Life on Earth." Another talk by Ray Hilborne at NCSU.

Officer elections are coming up at the last meeting of the school year, Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Fishing tournament probably is going to take place on Friday, April 13 from about 10 am – 5 pm.

o Tournament is either going to be bring your own pole or we may try to contact Carolina Ocean Studies, an educational group, to see if they might lend us poles for the event

o The tournament is for publicity, there will be free entry into the event. However, it was proposed that a raffle might be a good idea for a nice rod/reel combination

o Cassie and Joe compose the prize committee and they have obtained 3 rod/reel combinations, two-hour kayak tours/rentals, T-shirts, and gift certificates from area restaurants

o The tournament will be from 10-5 and weigh in with each fish caught. The tournament will take place in two campus ponds. Need 8 volunteers to help staff the event. Two banners will be required. The executive committee should be mandatory to attend the tournament

o It might be a good idea to send out a general email to "allstudents" to notify them of the upcoming tournament. Also should contact the Seahawk News to put an ad in. It was suggested that a local news agency (newspaper or television station) be called in to help promote AFS publicity.
