New Business
Chris working on webpage, sent it in for acceptance, and needs to talk to IT
Fundraisers:
Selling candy/chips/sodas in the library from 8-2am with 2 shifts
2-4 and 7-9 May, 2 people/shift
Fishing tournament: Gary Fisher of Fishermen’s Post doesn’t want us to sell T-shirts or accept donations due to conflict of interest. Will going to do weigh-ins on 20 May 06
Going to try to make t-shirts from library fundraiser, Chris’s friend in business will do graphic design for free if we only use him.
Fall involvement carnival:
30 Aug 06, want to have a booth. register by 18 Aug 06, but cannot until mid-July. want to give bags of Sweedish fish. Resources provided for signs.

Fred Scharf’s talk about the various opportunities at UNCW:
Red drum: new graduate student looking at understanding factors in survival and year class strengths. there will be a 4 month intensive fieldwork in the New River system. In conjunction with Got em on live-bait club, there will go out with the student in the field, sampling in spring. Starting in the fall, there will be a part-time technician, plus other stuend opportunities (DIS and Honors) extensive field and lab work. Also there may be black sea bass fecundity work in the winter (possibly)
Dr. Wantabe: Black sea bass and flounder work. the affects of diet and early growth and hatch success. also the cost of growing out fish as well as behavior of mate choice and reproduction. Flounder project in the fall, and is always looking for students for DIS and part time employment.
Dr. Clavijo: culture of Nemo’s, always undergraduates there for DIS, honor’s. currently looking at behavior work, aggressive behavior, mate choice, and coloration
Will’s flounder project: tagging in New River system to assess management changes. Gillnetting: tag-release, catch to see changes in exploitation rates, maturity schedule, growth rates, traveling of fish. Works 5 days a week so plenty of volunteering opportunities, but really early work.
Adam: ongoing bluefish study. haul seines on Wrightsville beach and estuary (intracoastal waterway) plenty of other opportunities at beach, soon will survey twice a month. Methot trips are all day tripsà large plankton net (9 sites) one time/month. Always opportunities to volunteer or work in lab. there are sand samples to sort and core.
